Back to School: Succeeding While Pregnant or Parenting

Pregnant Teen Goes Back to SchoolReturning to the classroom with a baby on the way—or already here—may seem like a staggering task. And, in a way, it is. But that doesn’t have to stop you. Succeeding in school is one challenge you can face—especially when you know how much help is available.

You Carry Your Motivation With You

The child you are carrying—or parenting—is going to face a brighter future with an educated mother. Mothers who finish school have greater self-confidence and self-respect, and face better opportunities in life. Their children are also more likely to do well in school and in life than the children of moms who drop out. So think of your diploma as a gift to both you and your child.

The Law Is On Your Side

You have the right, according to “Title IX” (Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. §1681 et seq.), to receive a complete education with appropriate allowances made for your special needs as a pregnant or parenting mom. Your school must continue to welcome you just as they would any other student. Like all students, you must be protected  from harassment. In addition, your school must be willing to adapt your program to work around your health, doctor appointments, and medical leave for childbirth.

Get the Medical Care You Need

Of course you have medical needs that are unique to your present circumstances. Teachers are required to provide make-up opportunities for class time you miss due to necessary doctor appointments, hospitalization or temporary health conditions connected to your pregnancy.

If you aren’t sure how to apply for help with your medical expenses, come on into our office and we can get you started on that process.

Emotional Support Makes All the Difference

There’s nothing like having a caring friend who really listens. A friend who believes in you and encourages you toward your goals. At Choices Pregnancy Center, we want to be that kind of friend to you. We will listen and help you express what you’re really feeling, wanting, and needing. And if you want ideas for coping with all the pressures you face, we have plenty. Read more about how we can coach you on your way to success.

Demystify Motherhood

Getting ready to become a mom can feel like heading into the Great Unknown. Let us help you be fully prepared. When you join our Earn While You Learn program, you and your advocate will personally select lessons on the things you most want to know about. Whether it’s bonding, prenatal development, managing labor, or some of our many other topics, we have videos and discussion guides that will take the mystery out of mothering.

If transportation is a problem, we are even available to work with your school counselor to meet with you at school.

Gather Your Resources

Moms need many things. You might be surprised at how many of them are within your reach.

Housing: Sometimes young, expectant moms find themselves without a place to live. Did you know that at Choices we can link you to housing options? Don’t let a fear of being homeless drive you to make desperate choices.

Baby supplies: The Baby Bucks you earn through Earn While You Learn can get you many of the items you will need for your baby, right from our own Boutique. From maternity clothes and baby blankets, to diapers and sleepers, strollers and highchairs, we can get you all set up.

Support Network: Getting you connected to people and organizations in your community who can provide additional services is another important way Choices serves you. We have several partners who stand ready to help, as soon as we know your needs.

Childcare: This is yet another area where Choices can help. We keep a list of referrals which you can explore to find a provider you like. To learn about financial help through the state of Minnesota, check out the Bridge to Benefits website page on Child Care Assistance.
